Reading Notes: Origins, "The Man in the Moon"

Image
Moon, source:  Flickr Notes:  The Man in the Moon: There was once a man who grew tired of his normal life and wanted to do something else. He consulted a wise man who, "had power over all things." He first became a stone, but ended up being sliced by a stone cutter, so he wished to be the stone cutter. As a stone cutter, he got tired and his feet were sore, and he decided he would rather be the sun. As the sun, he grew too hot, and then he said he wanted to be the moon, so the wise man finally turned him into the moon. After all these changes, the man decided that he wanted to return to his original form and original job, but the wise man said that he would not do so, as the man had changed so many times. The story here is about not taking what you have in your life for granted and being thankful for your life. After trying all these different things, he wanted desperately to be what he was originally, but was now stuck in a role that he didn’t want. The other theme in

Week 2 Reading Overview

Image
After looking through the reading overview and discovering what topics we will be reading about this semester, there are some that I am looking forward to more than others. I think the top three topics that I am most interested in include the Ancient Greece unit, Ancient Rome unit, and the Hero Tales from the British Celtic Unit. I really enjoy learning about Roman history as I took a class called Italian Renaissance Architecture a year ago, and loved learning about how some of the most incredible buildings in all of Italy were inspired by many different epics and ancient heroes. I'm very excited to be using the different sources on UnTextbook and the FreeBookapalooza site to learn about these different stories. Choose from  CLASSICAL and/or BIBLICAL units  for Weeks 3 and 4. Week 3: Aesops Fables  Week 4: Noah Choose from  MIDDLE EASTERN and/or INDIAN units  for Weeks 5 and 6. Week 5: Twenty-Two Goblins  Week 6: Persian Tales Choose from  ASIAN and/or AFRICAN uni

Time Strategies

Image
While looking over the schedule that you had sent me earlier in the week, I think that while it would work best to do everything in the first three days, I will most likely do it when I have time throughout the week instead of during a fixed time. As I plan to work ahead in this class, I think that I will just have to find time throughout each day to work on that weeks specific assignments. I will be traveling with my team most Fridays throughout the course of the semester so I will need to complete that weeks assignments before leaving so that I can not worry about it, and be more focussed for competitions. For the articles, I read the article titled "The important habit of just starting," by Jory Mackay, along with "How to beat procrastination," by Caroline Webb. My biggest takeaways from both is that procrastination only causes more stress and anxiety, and can even cause a disconnect from ones sense of future. I feel like in this class, it will be necessary f

Technology Intro

Image
After reading the information about the technology tools and course websites I am excited to get started using these to help me create my blog for the class. I have bookmarked the page for future reference as I will probably need it throughout the course of the semester. As for the browser tune up portion, I turned on my spell check, I added the word-count extension, and bookmarked multiple pages from this introduction. Intro to Assignments

Image
As I start this class, I am beginning to see how staying on a schedule and not falling behind is going to be crucial for me personally. I am a student who tends to procrastinate, especially with online classes, but I am going to try to do everything I can to not fall behind in this class. My goal is to finish this class early so that I can relax a little bit. I really like the fact that there are so many extra credit opportunities in this class as well. I am interested to start a few of them for week two, especially the growth mindset and wikipedia trail topics. Me studying for finals... source:  wikimedia

Growth Mindset Reaction

Image
My three biggest takeaways from the Growth Mindset assignment are as followed, "Not Yet," the development of a growth mindset, and not being afraid to fail. I have seen Carol Dweck's TED Talk before, but each time I rewatch it, I am reminded that having a growth mindset is something you have to work on constantly. Every aspect of your life presents an opportunity for you to better yourself in some way. The biggest aspects of my life that I see this in is in my academics, my athletics, and my relationships with others. In the TED talk, Carol talks about an education system that presented an opportunity for kids struggling with certain classes to be given a grade of "Not Yet" rather than receiving a failing grade. This simple two word phrase is so powerful if fully understood. The most important aspects of life require practice, patience, and failure. In academics, it is vital to understand that no one person learns the same way as another. This is one of my b

Introduction to a Student Athlete

Image
Hi everyone, my name is Randy Scharnhorst and I am currently a senior here at the University of Oklahoma and am in my last semester for finishing my degree in Health and Exercise Science. I am originally from Overland Park, Kansas, and have been attending the University of Oklahoma for the last three and a half years. The reason I chose to come to Oklahoma is because of a few important things. First of all, my girlfriend (current fiancée) was attending school at Oklahoma Baptist so this was a great option for me to be close to her. The second reason is that when first touring the campus, I felt like this was home. source :  Block O U. credit Wikimedia BOOMER SOONER! I had been on many college visits and this campus really felt comfortable and perfect for me. The third reason, and maybe the most important reason is that I wanted to continue my athletic career throughout college, and as a gymnast, there is no better place in the country than the University of Oklahoma. I have be

Nursery Rhymes: What Really Happened: source:  Nursery Rhymes: What Really Happened In this series of stories written by a previous student, they break down three popular nursery rhymes and write them in a first person context. The first story in the series is titled Little Bo-Peep, and recounts the story of the character little Bo-Peep, and how she lost her sheep one day. After reading the original nursery rhyme and reading this first person depiction of the story, I found it much easier to understand what really happened in the nursery rhyme. I really liked the descriptions that were used in this rendition of the story as it almost felt like a thrilling book. The second story in the series was Humpty Dumpty. This account of the story lengthens the original and adds context to what was happening in the city at the time of his great fall and gives the perspective of being an average citizen in the town on a day to day basis. I liked this style of writing as it gave a unique sense of

Laguna Beach and Kansas City; My Favorite Places

Image
(Kansas City, MO, Skyline from WWI Museum) https://pixabay.com/photos/kansas-city-missouri-union-station-1619506/ I was born in downtown Kansas City in 1997, and have lived in a suburb of the city for my entire life. This city has grown so much over the last two decades and is now booming with restaurants, night life, and event centers. One thing this city is famous for is the barbecue, and when anyone tells me that they are either taking a trip to or just driving through KC, I always tell them to make sure to stop by and get some of the best barbecue that can be found in the country. (Laguna Beach, CA) https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Laguna_Beach_Bucht.JPG Every Summer for the last three years I have had the opportunity to visit Aliso Viejo, California with my fiancée to visit her grandmother who lives there. During our trips, we always take a day or two to visit the beach and the shops along the Laguna Beach strip. The food, views, and weather in Laguna Beach are som
