Reading Notes: Twenty-Two Goblins B

The Snake's Poison:
Who is to blame for the Brahmans death?
A Brahman in the city of Benares suddenly woke up one morning and his beautiful wife was gone. He spent days mourning and looking in his city but could not find her. He went to a distant city and when he got there, he was so run down from the journey and the immense heat of the summer that he was nearly falling. A local Brahman and his wife pulled him into their home and gave him some food. Once he got the food, he set it under a tree and quickly bathed in the river. While bathing, a hawk landed in the tree above the man's food, and in the hawks claws hung a dead snake. This snake began to leak poison into mans food. The man ate the food, and then died.
The King and the goblin discussed it, and the King said the Dead man himself is to blame.

The Girl and the Thief:
Did he weep or laugh?
This story involves a king, a Father, a daughter and a city thief. One day, the king sent out his guards to watch over the city because thieves had been stealing from citizens all day. When the king stumbled upon a thief, the thief asked him who he was, and the king responded by saying, "Im a thief," and the actual thief was delighted and took him to his home. The home was filled with many gems and expensive items that had been stolen. The thief led the king into a room and told him to have a seat so that the thief could go out and rob the king, knowing all along who the king really was. A maid of the thief told the king of his plan and he left quickly and readied his army to combat the thief. Now the other part of the story was the Brahman Jewel and his daughter Pearl. Pearl was a very prudent woman and did not want any husband unless it was a god. This was until she heard about the story of the thief beating the kings army, and then finally being captured by the king himself. The thief was sentenced to death and Pearl begged her father to tell the king not to kill him, because she was deeply in love. Long story short, the thief was killed, but at the moment before his death, he saw the girl and those with her and became emotion, however when he took his last breath, he had a grin on his face.
So, the goblin asked the King if the thief was weeping or laughing before his death, and the king said both. He was emotional from grief, but was also grinning about how the girl rejected the kings orders and fell in love with a thief like him.

The General's Wife:
A mighty king was offered a wife from a merchant, and when the king sent his men to observe her and report back, his men realized that her beauty was too much for the king and figured surely the kingdom would go to waste if he married her. His men told him that she was flawed, and so the king told the merchant to marry her to his general. After years of not knowing about her beauty, he finally saw her and went crazy. His general even told him that as he the general was slave to the king, so was the wife. The general said that he would give the king his wife, no questions asked. But the king was too virtuous and would not take her. He slowly shriveled away and died, enraged and in love. The general could not forgive himself for the kings death, and buried himself alive.
So the goblin asked the king, who was more deserving of the woman? The king said he thought the king was more deserving because he died for the cause of not taking a wife from his general. This is why he was more deserving.

The Four Brothers:
Four sons of a great Brahman were stumped on what to do with their lives after their father's passing, so they traveled to their grandfathers house to visit with their uncles. During this time, they used up many of the uncles resources, and this bothered them all. The eldest brother told a story about how he wished he had been dead one day when he saw a dead man in the forest. They then spread out to wander the earth with the goal of learning a science or trade. When they all gathered together again, they told each other about their new gifts, and all of them dealt with basic biology and physiology. The first son's skill was taking a skeleton of any animal and put the proper skin on it. The second son learned how to cover the skin with hair and skin. The third son had the ability to now put eyes and organs into the animal. Finally, the fourth son had the ability to bring the breath of life into the animal. With this new knowledge, they decided to go into the woods to gather materials to begin testing their skills. They found the skeleton of a lion and then each of them applied their own unique skills to the carcass, and soon enough were able to create a horrible looking lion. The lion immediately killed the sons.
The goblin asked the king, which son was the most at fault for the creation of the lion. The king said to him, the one that gave the breath of life to the lion is to blame, because it was his fault for knowing the creature was a lion after all the organs and flesh had been placed and still bringing it to life.

The Old Hermit:
The son of a very old king was born, and by the age of 16 he had stolen the cities love and support. Then one day he died, and the custom of the city was to burn the body as a sacrifice. When the old relatives of the boys parents came to them to collect the body, they wouldn't allow for the boys body to be burned. Finally, they changed their mind, and offered the boy to the elders. They took the body to a sacred burning area and all those who loved the boy came to the site to mourn him before the body was burned. At this time, a very old hermit was in his den, and heard the many people wailing and mourning nearby. He went out of his home and asked them what was going on, and after they told him, he said he would help. The hermit then decided to switch his body for the younger one. He went aside and cried, then danced. After that he did the switch, and woke up in the young boy's body, and everyone cheered.
So the goblin asked the king, why did the hermit cry and then dance? the king said to him, He cried because of grief and from leaving his own body which he loved, then he danced because he was excited that he would be gaining youth.

Father and Son, Daughter and Mother:
A king and his wife and daughter were forced out of their city and traveled the country side to a relatives house. On the journey, they were coming towards a city that was filled with robbers, and when the robbers saw the king was close, they went out to rob him. The king told his wife and daughter that these men were evil and that they must run into the thick woods and hide. The king then faced the entire army of robbers alone, and was killed. Then, a man named Fierce-lion and his son Strong-lion came upon the foot tracks of the two women and searched them out. When they found the foot tracks, the son noticed that there were two different sets of tracks, one smaller and the other one bigger. The son told his father that he must marry the one with the bigger foot steps, because she surely had to be older. They found the women and much to their surprise, the older woman had smaller feet than the daughter. So the older man married the daughter and the son married the mother.
So the goblin asked the king for one last time, what was the relationship between the children of each couple? The king was stumped though. The goblin had finally gotten to the king, and now the king turned away and walked in silence. The goblin told him to come back and gave the magic powers that the monk wanted to the king instead, and then gave the king the body for his perseverance. The goblin told the king that he must do one thing before he could receive the powers though, he told the king that he must trick the monk into lying on the ground, and then cut the monks head off, for the monk would otherwise kill him.

Conclusion:
When the king finally returned after the long journey with the goblin, he was greeted by the monk, who had prepared a worship site to extract the magic from the body. After exchanging a few words, the king told the monk what the goblin had told him to say, and the monk went down to the ground. In doing this, the king could finish the plan, and he struck the monks head off and took out his heart and split it in half. He took the head and the heart to the goblin in the sissoo tree and they were both very pleased with each other. This is the end.
